Theresa Morelock - an arrest after 33 years

Thirty-three years.
That’s how long Theresa Morelock’s case sat open.
Not forgotten. Just… waiting.
I’ve been close to this case for a long time, working on the science behind it across different chapters of my career. Going back to my days at Sorenson Forensics, through Intermountain Forensics, and even in small ways during my time at Resolve, I’ve had a front row seat to what it actually takes to carry something like this forward.
That’s the part most people don’t see.
This wasn’t a headline case. Theresa wasn’t a name that stayed in the spotlight. There were no cameras on this one year after year.
But the work never stopped.
Detective Cordon Parks and the SLCPD team just kept going. Reworking evidence. Following leads. Holding onto the belief that someday the science would catch up to the case.
And eventually, it did.
Cases like this don’t get solved because of one breakthrough. They get solved because people refuse to let go.
Because someone keeps the file alive. Because someone keeps asking the question. Because someone cares enough to keep going… even when nobody is watching.
There are also people behind the scene.. the labs, scientists, investigators.. who played a role in getting this case to where it is today.
You know who you are. I have nothing but gratitude for you.
I’m incredibly proud of the SLCPD team for seeing this through. This is what real commitment to victims looks like.
My thoughts are with Theresa’s family and loved ones. I can’t imagine the weight of carrying something like this for so long, and I hope this brings some measure of peace.
But most importantly..
Theresa mattered.
She mattered in 1993. She mattered every year this case stayed open. And she still matters now.
I’m grateful for the people who never let her be forgotten.
